The Rutkin Shell House, designed by award winning architect Seymour (Sy) Rutkin, RA., was chosen by Architectural Record in January 2004 as House of the Month. The concept for this 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom, 2400 square foot modern structure built in 1996, was to meet the needs of “green” construction in the future. Unlike the geodesic dome, Rutkin’s curved shell is a more organic form allowing each room to take on a character of it’s own. The 24 foot glass and porcelain paneled south facing façade gave Mr. Rutkin the opportunity to play with shapes and color that would break up such a large surface. The 1800 square foot terrace constructed of terracotta colored concrete reflects the arch of the house itself. The interior space is just as fascinating and interesting as the exterior of the house. The 24 foot high barrels ceiling and 45 +/- foot living room wall flood the space with incredible light and allows for the amazing views of the Catskill Mountains. All of the bedrooms in the house share in those views as well. The loft is accessible with an elegantly designed modern metal and wood spiral staircase. The loft space not only takes in the view of the mountains, it has an incredible view of the living area below.
